Inspired by Theo Jansen's iconic Strandbeests, I worked with a team of engineers and industrial designers to create a 5 foot tall walking mechanical creature. We began by studying the physics of his kinetic sculptures and scaled up the dimensions as large as we could within the constraints of our materials and machines. I helped design the connections within each leg, as well as the moving joints between the legs and the main body. I calculated the necessary amounts of materials such as PVC, wood, masonite, and cardboard, compiled a detailed parts list, and presented a plan for construction. We laser cut the parts for 12 identical legs, assembled the Strandbeest, and presented our finished product to Mr. Jansen himself during his sold-out lecture at the RISD auditorium.
